COAT advocates for accessibility and usability of technology for people with disabilities. Enacting the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act (21st CVAA) was a huge step forward and we are working to implement this new law. COAT’s overall aim is to ensure accessibility, usability, and affordability of all broadband, wireless, and Internet technologies for people with disabilities.
Text 9-1-1 Begins in Iowa
Waterloo, Iowa became the first locality to accept text calls to 9-1-1 on Wednesday, August 5, 2009. The service is currently available only to T-Mobile subscribers in Black Hawk County. The emergency operator can reply in text as well. Since wireless devices don't deliver the caller's exact location, the caller must tell the emergency operator where he/she is so that help can be sent. COAT supports full implementation of text and video access to emergency services, in every location and for every user.
