COAT advocates for accessibility and usability of technology for people with disabilities. Enacting the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act (21st CVAA) was a huge step forward and we are working to implement this new law. COAT’s overall aim is to ensure accessibility, usability, and affordability of all broadband, wireless, and Internet technologies for people with disabilities.
New Zealand Trials Video Relay Service
A government-funded video relay service will be trialed in Northland, one of 16 regions in New Zealand, in November 2009. For 29,000 sign language users, this is a long-awaited service, allowing them to communicate in their own language. Sign language is one of three official languages in New Zealand.
