COAT advocates for accessibility and usability of technology for people with disabilities. Enacting the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act (21st CVAA) was a huge step forward and we are working to implement this new law. COAT’s overall aim is to ensure accessibility, usability, and affordability of all broadband, wireless, and Internet technologies for people with disabilities.
COAT Affiliate APT Morphs Broadband Focus & Honors Key People November 19
COAT affiliate Alliance for Public Technology (APT) is becoming the National Broadband Resource Center (NBRC) in recognition that it has achieved the purposes for which it was originally created and is now shifting its focus from broadband deployment to adoption and innovation. The NBRC launch takes place Thursday November 19, 2009, at the NEA offices in Washington, DC, with a special program followed by a reception & awards event. NBRC will present this year's Susan B. Hadden Pioneer Awards to Dr. Judith Harkins, Director of the Technology Access Program at Gallaudet, and to Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) and FCC Diversity Chief Mark Lloyd.
APT routinely provides conference space and technology support for COAT's monthly meetings and has extended a special invitation to COAT affiliate representatives to attend the event. For further information, please contact Sylvia Rosenthal.
Gallaudet's Technology Access Program, under Dr. Harkin's leadership, has been instrumental in researching and promulgating ways to make communications technology accessible for people with sensory disabilities.
COAT representatives Karen Peltz Strauss, Jenifer Simpson and Larry Goldberg are board members of APT.
