COAT advocates for accessibility and usability of technology for people with disabilities. Enacting the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act (21st CVAA) was a huge step forward and we are working to implement this new law. COAT’s overall aim is to ensure accessibility, usability, and affordability of all broadband, wireless, and Internet technologies for people with disabilities.
Future Media in a Digital Age: COAT Comments to FCC--More Accessibility, Please!
On May 3, 2010, COAT sent Comments to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in a docket entitled "Examination of the Future Media and Information Needs of Communities in a Digital Age." This "Future of Media Project" will produce a report that will lead to policy recommendations. COAT's comments addressed the overwhelming need for information in accessible formats, devices that pass through embedded accessibility, and usability of controls to navigate content.
Specifically, we discussed captioning, video description, and emergency information accessibility, the need for more research, and clarification on who should be responsible for ensuring accessibility and usability as media is disseminated in new ways.
