COAT’s overall aim is to ensure accessibility, usability, and affordability of all broadband, wireless, and Internet technologies for people with disabilities.
Sen. John Kerry Says It's Time to Knock Down Online Barriers to Ensure No One Excluded from Internet
In a Press Release on May 4, 2010, Senator John Kerry (D-MA), Chairman of the powerful Senate Subcommittee on Communications, Technology & the Internet, affirmed the principle of inclusion of people with disabilities to activities on the Internet. In referring to his introduction of S. 3304, he stated:
“Technology and the Internet have broken down barriers across our society, and we must ensure that no one is excluded from this vital part of everyday modern life in America,” Kerry said. “Our bill will make sure that millions of Americans with disabilities—including our returning service members—will benefit from the economic, social, and political opportunities that modern communications and the Internet make possible. It’s been twenty years since the Americans with Disabilities Act knocked down barriers to employment and government services—and now it’s time to do the same thing online.”
The measure, "Equal Access to 21st Century Communications Act” (S.3304), was recently introduced in the U.S. Senate and awaits Committee action.
