Wireless Industry Chief Says H.R. 3101 is Important Step Forward In Accessibility
Press Release: CTIA-The Wireless Association® Commends Mark-Up of 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act. Posted July 21, 2010
WASHINGTON, July 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- After the House Committee on Energy and Commerce approved an amended version of the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act (H.R. 3101), CTIA-The Wireless Association® President and CEO Steve Largent released the following statement:
"As we prepare to recognize the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act next week, today's House Energy and Commerce Committee's mark-up of the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act is an important step toward ensuring all Americans have access to, and benefit from, wireless products and services."We appreciate the willingness of Congressman Markey and the Committee's bi-partisan leadership to work with CTIA to accommodate many of the wireless industry's concerns.
"The biggest improvement to the bill was the addition of language clarifying that not every product or service must be designed to accommodate every possible disability. Other improvements to the legislation include the clarification that there is no mandate to use or incorporate proprietary technology and the flexibility for the industry to determine how to achieve the bill's accessibility obligations. By making these changes, our members will be able to continue to offer American consumers the cutting-edge technology that they have come to demand and expect from our industry."CTIA-The Wireless Association® (www.ctia.org) is an international organization representing the wireless communications industry. Membership in the association includes wireless carriers and their suppliers, as well as providers and manufacturers of wireless data services and products.
